Keep Carbondale Beautiful Fights Against Cigarette Litter

By WSIL Reporter

CARBONDALE  --  A local group is asking smokers to think twice before flicking a cigarette butt. Keep Carbondale Beautiful is targeting the habit.

Members are encouraging smokers to dispose of their cigarettes the right way. The group installed six ashtray receptacles near restaurants, bars and shops around Carbondale.

Smokers can toss their butts in on the way into a smoke-free area.  Business owners say they've already seen a difference in the amount of cigarette litter.

Sarah Hayer is the Executive Director of Keep Carbondale Beautiful.  She says it's a good start, but more people have to take the initiative.  That's why they're working to get the word out.

The group is also handing out personal ashtrays and car cup holder receptacles as a part of the effort.
