A Sunny Snow Day Brings Out the Sleds in Carbondale
CARBONDALE -- The cold temperatures were not about to stop some people in Carbondale Saturday, who've been dying to play outside in the snow. Kids, grandkids, and kids at heart were able to stretch their legs Saturday and finally enjoy the snow.
Beth Helsly says Saturday's snow day was the first time she has been out of the house in two days; and she was ready to finally use her sled.
"My car is literally snowed in. So thankfully, my husband's got a truck so we were able to make it out here today."
Beth and her kids were among dozens of people in search of the perfect ride.
"The mission was to go down as far as possible. The goal is to get to the road without going in the road. We've done that before, and we've actually gone in the road, and that wasn't a good thing," explains Bob Davis.
Davis says he has several snow themed events planned for his grandchildren, but a snowman wasn't in the cards just yet.
"This is not good snowman snow," he explains. "Now, later in the week when it starts to melt a little bit... See, right now it's just powder, but later in the week we'll make a big snow man."
But to enjoy the snow you have to be outside and not everyone is too thrilled about the cold winter temperatures.
"My feet are freezing," exclaims Helsly. "These two will handle it, but as far as mom's concerned, I may have to sit in the truck and watch."
The white stuff typically doesn't stick around for too long in our region, so whether it's cold or not, some folks say they're going to make the best of it.
Several SIU students also found some time away from their books. A few of them could be found sledding on campus near the student center.
