Unsung Hero: Larry Myers
WSIL -- Larry Myers drives a truck for a living and knows a thing or two about repairing a tire or other mechanical issue on a big rig.
Larry was enjoying a Gene Watson concert in McLeansboro when he learned the band had a flat tire.
His friend and part time McLeansboro police officer Steve Bowling was also at the concert.
"When Gene got on stage he talked about how they had trouble with a
blowed out tire, and my neighbor Larry Myers is a truck driver," said Steve Bowling.
Singer Gene Watson and his crew were having a hard time finding a local mechanic able to replace the tire on their tour bus.
"The bus driver, his name was Drop, he was very worried. He thought
they'd have to stay there til Sunday morning to have somebody bring them a tire," said Larry.
The road crew was prepared to stay in southern Illinois longer than expected if they couldn't get the tire fixed. That's when they were introduced to Larry.
"Once everything was done and the show was over, I escorted them out to Larry's house," said Steve, "He was good enough to fix the tire and I done most of the talking to Gene."
Larry says he didn't think twice about offering to change the tire at no cost.
"Gene tried to give me money and I said, 'No, I might be broke down someday and you can help me,'" explained Larry.
Larry and Steve say they already liked Gene Watson's music, but they say this experience has made them bigger fans!
"They said they never thought they would meet people like they had, they was tickled to death," said Steve.
"I'm just glad to be friends with Gene Watson and help somebody out like that," said Larry.
Steve says he wasn't at all surprised to witness Larry's generosity.
"Larry's just like that, he's been that way all his life," said Steve.
"I can give credit to my dad, Alan Myers, he taught us to be that way.
That's just the way we are in southern Illinois," said Larry.
Gene Watson sent pictures to his new friends so they will always remember this chance encounter.
