Late-Winter Deer Season Opens Friday
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Hunters are hoping for better weather this weekend for the added late-winter firearm deer season.
Seven counties in southern Illinois are open for the late doe season. Hunters in Randolph, Perry, Jefferson, Wayne, White, Hamilton and Saline counties can be out from Friday morning through Sunday evening.
That leaves areas like Rend Lake divided, since the zone includes only the northern half of the lake in Jefferson County. The Army Corps of Engineers says the division hasn't been an issue in the past.
"Most hunters are responsible hunters and they're experienced and they are aware of where they can and cannot hunt, and a lot of the hunting permits, in general, especially for shotgun seasons, are by county," said Lena Bennett with the Corps of Engineers.
Many of the permits used in the late winter season are tags left unfilled from the earlier firearm seasons. Bennett wants to remind archery hunters in open counties that wearing blaze orange is required this weekend.
