Grant Will Help With Child Mental Health Services
CARTERVILLE -- A child advocacy group wants to bring more mental health experts to Southern Illinois.
The Poshard Foundation has donated $100,000 to the SIU School of Medicine. The money will be used to create a mental health resource network for abused children in 16 Southern Illinois counties.
Experts say more than 40 percent of Illinois children have suffered some type of traumatic experience.
"Even for children who witness domestic violence or witness even one traumatic event in their lives it affects their brain, it affects them for the rest of their lives," said Clinical Director Ginger Meyer
"We felt it was the best way that we could meet their needs, help them recover, and allow them to have hope in their futures," said Jo Poshard with the Poshard Foundation.
The grant money will help train 50 mental health specialists over the next 18 months.
