Mission Accomplished: Warriors Win It All
DANVILLE -- Moraine Valley College ended Rend Lake's season last year at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The Warriors returned the favor this year, winning the first basketball National Championship in school history in the process.
The rematch was over not long after it got started.
Rend Lake jumped out to a 21-5 lead less than five minutes into the game and cruised to an 87-69 title clinching victory.
The Warriors led 48-26 at the half and were never really threatened after intermission.
Cortez Macklin led four in double figures with 19. Jeril Taylor added 15, while Tournament MVP Bronson Verhines posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds to go with three blocks. Noel Allen chipped in 12.
After suffering a severely sprained ankle in the semifinals, Dawson Verhines scored five points--but added eight assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks. He was given the Tournament's Sportsman Award.
The Warriors were 9-19 from three-point range, with Macklin and Taylor combining to hit 7-11 from deep. Macklin and Taylor were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Moraine meanwhile struggled from distance, making just nine of 30 three-point field goals. Rend Lake held the Cyclones to 35 percent shooting for the game.
The Warriors finished their championship season 30-3.
