CHARLESTON -- With the move to three classes for track, Thursdays at the State Track and Field Championships are now about 1A preliminaries. Several area girls tried to earn spots in Saturdays finals Thursday in Charleston.
The day provided mixed success for the area contingent. Carterville's Maddi Meyer led the way, qualifying for the 100, 200, 400 and the long jump finals. Meyer won her heats in the 200 and 400.
Other area qualifiers include A-J's Hannah Reach in the pole vault, Nashville's Easten Hoepker in the discus, Chester's Sarah Bindel in both hurdle events, Christopher's Paige Rodgers in the 300 hurdles, Pinckneyville's Sophie Keith in the 400, and Carterville's Aurora Breeden in the 800. A pair of relays also qualified--Chester's 4x100 and Carterville's 4x800.
The 2A prelims are Friday.
