Restaurant Report Card: Oct. 21, 2013
WSIL -- The inspector gave King Barbacoa in Mt. Vernon an 82 on its most recent check.
Two critical violations posed the biggest problems. A broken refrigerator was seventeen degrees too warm, which meant two pounds of baked beans, some smoked chicken, hamburger and eggs had to be thrown away.
The restaurant lost four more points because none of the management was certified in food handling and safety. The report notes that particular violation had been an issue for three months. Grocery bags were being used to store food, there were spills in the bottom of a cooler, one restroom needed a hand drying device, and stall doors that didn't close correctly.
We reached out to King Barbacoa, but management did not return our calls for comment.
It was an 87 for Creekside Grill at the Stone Creek Golf Course in Makanda. That's an eight point improvement from the last time it was featured.
There was only one critical problem; a compressor on the sewage system wasn't working. The grill and the floor under the deep fryer and the dish machine needed cleaning, there was standing water in one of the bar coolers, and some food wasn't stored high enough off the floor in the freezer.
The health department checked back a week later, but the sewage system was still an issue. Two components of it were unplugged and not operating as originally designed.
A second follow-up found everything had been fixed.
Rural Route Country Cookin in Mt. Vernon boosted its marks by seven points since it appeared on the Report Card back in February, up to an 89.
The lone critical violation was a refrigeration issue. Fish, french toast mix, and sausage had to be tossed out because they weren't kept at a safe temperature.
Sesser's Iron Horse Pub scored high with a 95.The restaurant lost a few points because the light in the storeroom didn't work, some shelving was dirty, and there was duct tape on the handle of a utensil and a door.
And topping this week's list is Honeybaker's in Marion with a 96. The freezer door wasn't closing tightly enough, and a wall in the servers' station had to be repaired.
