Water Shut Off Planned in West Frankfort
WEST FRANKFORT -- Major water line repairs are set to take place in West Frankfort on Tuesday. A water line break occurred last week, and the city has been losing thousands of gallons of water ever since.
"We are digging them out today so when the guys get here in the morning we will be ready to go," said West Frankfort Water Superintendent Rick McLaskey.
For nearly a week, a steady stream has been spilling out of a cracked water line near Cleveland Street in West Frankfort.
"I don't think it's the cold," explained McLaskey. "I think the ground has shifted somewhat."
A neighbor first spotted the break Wednesday.
"I noticed it several days before they found it," explained Ed Krandz. "It filled our neighbors backyard full of water and froze."
Despite the broken pipe, residents have been able to keep their watering running.
"We still got water pressure," said Krandz. "We still got everything we need."
The city will shut off the water for several hours beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, impacting hundreds of homes from Cherry Street to Old Marion Road.
"We are shutting down about a 20 block area to make this repair," said McLaskey. "I'd say it will impact a thousand people, but there is no other way to put it back together without getting the water off of me."
Workers plan to install a new pipe by Tuesday afternoon.
"I can't keep letting the city pay for water running down the road," explained McLaskey. "I got to take care of this problem."
