Morthland is Ready for Some Football

By WSIL Sports

WEST FRANKFORT -- Saying the time is right to add football, Morthland College announced the latest addition to its sports department Monday.

The small Christian college in West Frankfort introduced high school hall of fame coach Mike Rude as its first head coach.  Rude will also teach a history class and serve as the school's athletic director.

Rude said it was a dream come true to finish his career at the collegiate level, after 44 years as a high school coach.  He added that his experience building the Vienna-Goreville program should serve him well.

Rude left Johnston City to start the V-G program back in 2007.  The Eagles went to the playoffs each of the past two years.

Rude said they will concentrate on recruiting in 2014 at Morthland, with a junior varsity schedule planned for 2015, and an inaugural varsity season in 2016.

Morthland College president Dr. Tim Morthland said the school will be purchasing some land where the field will be built.  The school is also planning on adding dorms in near future.
