BENTON -- The Benton Rangers improved to 2-0 on a rare Thursday night game at Tabor Field, defeating Sparta 62-40.

The game was moved up 24 hours due to the impending weather anticipated to come from Hurricane Isaac.

Sparta (0-2) put up a fight early keeping the game close on a long touchdown run by Phil Lockhart.

But Benton QB Mat Buntin made sure it didn't stay close very long.

Buntin took back to back QB sneaks to get the Rangers into the redzone where Dylan Sheek would take over.

Sheek took consecutive handoffs to get Benton back in the endzone and put the Rangers on top for good. Sheek ended the night with 199 yards on the ground.

The Rangers led 62-21 before holding on for the 22 point win, in a game that took nearly three and a half hours to complete.

Benton heads to Pinckneyville next week while Sparta welcomes Murphysboro to town.
