Unsung Hero: Prom PossibleCARMI - While school dances are something many high schoolers look forward to, the expense involved can make it difficult for lots of girls. "I've always wanted to go to prom- and I never thought I'd ever get to go," says Carmi-White County Senior April Clark. She and others say it can be tough to pay to go to the dance and buy the dress. When fellow student Brooke Crawford learned that a number of girls might skip the school's 2011 prom- she took action.
With the help of some friends, Brooke started a dress drive called "Prom Possible".
"I had a goal of 50 dresses and we had over 150 donated to us- so we tripled our goal," says Brooke. Girls could browse the selection in the gym at school, and nearly two-dozen- including April- found great gowns. "I tried it on and I actually instantly fell in love with it," April remembers. But the pre-prom experience didn't end there... "We gave hairstyles and manicures and pedicures- things that they would need for prom- so they could feel like every other person," says Brooke. "Because it didn't matter if they didn't have money for prom, we were going to make it happen." Given the success of Prom Possible's first dress drive, Brooke wanted to make dresses available year-round to girls from all over for dances, pageants, and other occasions. She's fixing up a donated space in the old skating rink in Muddy, turning it into the Prom Possible store. Girls won't pay a dime, but they'll leave with lots of confidence thanks Brooke's hard work- and compassion. "Some girls think they're not good enough to go to prom and stuff like that- but she makes them feel better," says April. Brooke adds, "Our slogan is 'Making Dreams Come True- One Dress at a Time." The Prom Possible location on route 45 in Muddy is open the first and third Saturday of the month. To learn more, or to make a donation, visit the Prom Possible website.
