Unsung Hero: Patsy Hollon
WEST FRANKFORT - From the hair, to the makeup, to the dresses- a group of girls had a Homecoming dance to remember at West Frankfort High School.
"I actually cried when I was getting them ready," says Patsy Hollon of West Frankfort. "I cried after I seen them all together." Patsy is a graduate of West Frankfort High School, and has a close connection to the group. Her sister Michelle is among the class of special needs students. "She wanted to go to the dances, but she was too nervous and too scared. And I found out all of them were too nervous and too scared." And Patsy wanted to change that. She found dresses for all of the girls and spent hours pampering them from head to toe. "We got our hair done, and makeup, and nails," says high school Junior, June Birchler. And then they hit the dance floor with a little extra spring in their step. "For most of them I think it was their first experience to have makeup put on, to have their nails done- to have their hair done up really fancy," says special education teacher Marsha Smart. Whether it's hosting holiday parties or celebrating birthdays- Patsy has been organizing events for the girls for the past 3 years... making them feel beautiful inside and out. "People need to look at these kids and realize that they're so much stronger than all of us," says Patsy. |
