Unsung Hero: Jayna HartBENTON - For two decades Jayna Hart has been filling boxes to send to troops overseas. It began as a project with her kids, to share the importance of giving back. It continued as Jayna created more and more connections with those serving our country. "I'm very excited. I get excited like a kid in a candy factory- I guess that'd be the way I could tell you. I just love doing it," says Jayna. The Benton resident and aide at Benton Intermediate school gets names of local soldiers from the National Guard or from the website anysoldier.com. And many local people have stepped forward to help out on postage, including Jayna's friend and veteran- Gene Alexander. He knows how much the care packages mean. "I remember in my Army days whenever we got one, we'd say- oh what've you got? And we'd all have to share it," Gene recalls. And while Jayna's focus is providing the comforts of home, the letters and emails she gets in return have taught her even more about the soldiers' sacrifice. "I still cry when they sing the national anthem," says Jayna. "I cry when somebody dies, even though I don't know them." And to follow in the footsteps of Jayna's good deeds, Gene says there's one question everyone should ask... "What can I do to help. I think in all situations- that's part of being a good American," says Gene. Despite her selfless acts, Jayna doesn't want to take the credit. "The Unsung Heroes out there are the people who are fighting for me," she says. "So it's a very good honor, but they deserve it."
