Unsung Hero: Pinckneyville Hospital
PINCKNEYVILLE - It's a festive atmosphere in Santa's Workshop... also known as Pinckneyville Community Hospital, where the elves are the ladies of the medical records department.
"Yesterday actually we all broke out in song- singing Christmas carols in the department," says Medical Records Manager, Rhonda Schneider. The records group is heading up the hospital's annual Angel Tree to support children in need at the Perry-Jackson Child Advocacy Center. Schneider says there were more than 40 tags for children on the tree this year. It's the most they've ever had. "Some employees take two or three and sometimes departments take a couple." Dorothy Mitchell in the dietary department started with four and then... "I really had a good time doing this, so the other day I took another name off," says Dorothy. "They're not just buying one gift," says Rhonda. "We get bags full of gifts for these little children, so our employees really come together for the season for our community." Betti Mucha with the Child Advocacy Center says they rely on outside help to give gifts to children who might not otherwise receive anything. "We couldn't use our budget to do that- no," Mucha says. "Without it, we wouldn't be able to provide it." The Child Advocacy Center considers these ladies at the hospital their heroes, and hospital CEO Tom Hudgins says their generous spirit is just a way of life. "It's part of what keeps you in healthcare over time," says Hudgins. "You may come into it for a variety of reasons, but if you stay- it's because you care about people." And this isn't the last joyous gathering you'll find in Santa's Workshop. The ladies hope to take part for years to come. |
