FARMINGTON, MO (AP) - A suspect is dead and a police officer injured after an exchange of gunfire in the eastern Missouri town of Farmington.

The Park Hills Daily Journal reports that officers were called to an apartment early Monday to try and bring in a man for jumping bail. Police Chief Rick Baker says the man barricaded himself inside and was armed with a handgun.

The man allegedly ran from the apartment and fired a shot before getting away. He was tracked to an area near a drug store. Baker says that as officers approached the man shot at them. A St. Francois County deputy was struck in the leg but his injury is not considered life-threatening.

Officers returned fire, killing the suspect. The suspect's name has not been released.
