WSIL- Here is a list of Martin Luther King Jr. events throughout the area on Monday, January 16.
30th Annual NAACP Martin Luther King Commemorative Breakfast, 7 a.m. at Grinnell Hall's lower level. Program begins at 9 a.m. followed by a march at 11 a.m.
10th annual Martin Luther King Day Breakfast 7:30 a.m. at Harris Pruett Building. Program starts at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 to attend.
18th annual Memorial Breakfast will start at 9 a.m. at the Meridian Elementary School Gym. Tickets are $12. Event includes breakfast, silent auction, health screening and guest speaker Rev. Anthony Witherspoon.
The annual march will start at 10:15 a.m. Participants will walk east along Park Avenue to the Martin Luther King Jr. monument.
There will be a police escort and a vehicle to carry those who can't walk the distance. The annual luncheon immediately follows at the
27th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration "Affirming the American Promise" will be held at the Holiday Inn in Mount Vernon. Guest Speaker will be Rev. Ed Hearn. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and younger.
The Pavillion will hold a free luncheon starting at 11:00 a.m.
AmeriCorps VISTA members in southern Illinois are looking for volunteers to spread the word about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and local tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The campaign begins on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday, January 16, 2012, and ends on Tax Day, April 17, 2012.
