Man Serving Life for Cape Murders Gets Court Hearing
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (AP) - A judge has ruled that a man seeking to have his convictions overturned for killing a pregnant Cape Girardeau woman and her son will get another day in court.
Ryan Patterson is serving three life sentences for the 2009 deaths of Jamie Orman, her unborn child and her 15-year-old son, Derrick.
He filed a motion in January to have his convictions overturned, set aside or vacated. Patterson argued that he was wrongfully convicted, citing problems with the evidence, witnesses, investigators and his attorney.
The Southeast Missourian reports Cape Girardeau Circuit Court Judge William Syler on Monday scheduled an Oct. 28 bench trial on Patterson's motion.
Prosecutors say Patterson killed his victims in a failed effort to kill Orman's boyfriend and burn his home to collect insurance money.
