Longtime Mayor Rolland Lewis Dies

MOUNT VERNON -- A longtime Mount Vernon mayor will be laid to rest later this week. Rolland Lewis died Saturday at his home at the age of 81.

Lewis served two stints as Mt. Vernon's mayor, from 1969 to 1977 and again from 1985 to 1997.

He was known for working tirelessly on behalf of the community.

"Politics was in his blood," said current mayor Mary Jane Chesley. "He loved being mayor. He thrived on being mayor and the city benefited from that."

Visitation for Rolland Lewis will be held Tuesday evening from 5 to 9 p.m.at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Funeral services are set for Wednesday morning at 11a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.
