CHICAGO (AP) - Attorneys have assembled for a first court appearance on a lawsuit seeking to block November ballot initiatives calling for term limits and a new redistricting process.

The lawsuit says state election officials shouldn't spend public money on the proposals, but attorneys for the other side say it would cost more to adjudicate the case.

The lawsuit was filed by election attorney Michael Kasper who's represented many public officials, including House Speaker Michael Madigan. Kasper declined comment Monday.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Mary Mikva disclosed she knows people linked to the case, which could be raised as reason for her recusal because Kasper represented her during her election. However, it appeared that attorneys didn't object.

Another hearing is Wednesday.

Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner led the term limits initiative.
