WILLIAMSON CO. -- The recent controversy at the VA brought Congressman John Shimkus to Marion Monday.

He spent about an hour touring the hospital and talking one-on-one with employees and patients. Shimkus said he wanted to hear from people without administrators around.

Shimkus also believes Robert McDonald is good change for the VA. He's hopeful McDonald's private sector experience will make an impact. However, he's also seen past private sector leaders get lost in the government system.

"Can they insure that it is doing timely response and meeting constituents needs?," said Shimkus. "Is it really a customer-driven organization and make sure that it's not a bureaucratic institution."

Shimkus said the patients he spoke to were about 50-50 on their experiences in Marion. He added that one positive for the local VA is that there are a lot of hard working employees.
