Southern Illinois Miners' Opening Day
MARION -- Friday is opening day for the Southern Illinois Miners.
Huge crowds are expected to cheer on the team that took home last year's Frontier League Championship.
There are plenty of reasons that keep the fans coming back each year.
Ammi Russell comes all the way from Olmstead to see the action and says, "I like watching the games because I play softball myself and I learn good tips from the players while I'm here."
Miners games have become a family ritual for Ava resident, Kathy Compton. She says, "I love coming here and spending
time with my family while watching a good baseball game on a beautiful day. We love baseball in our family."
The mascots are also a big draw for Miners fans. The team has three goofy characters who pal around the stadium during games.
Media Relations Director, Mike Ventola says, " Lucky the Canary, Grounder the Mole and Big John the Miner are great with the crowds and are always around to entertain the fans."
