Spring Planting Tips

By Melissa Kohn

HERRIN -- The spring weather is much cooler than usual but that shouldn't worry those green thumbs who are planning to plant their gardens.

Plantscape Nursey manager, Margie Rehagen says this cooler weather is the perfect time to start planting heartier fruits and vegetables. She says, "Plenty of bare root plants such as asparagus, strawberries, blueberries and even white pine trees tend to enjoy these cooler temperatures.

If you're planning on planting a flower garden Rehagen says, "Pansies thrive in the cooler temperatures. Snap dragons, rose bushes and lilles don't mind the chilly weather either."
