Winter Storm Slows Brookport Cleanup
MASSAC COUNTY -- Icy conditions are impacting residents throughout Southern Illinois, especially those in Brookport.
Cleanup and rebuilding efforts were stalled during the storm this past weekend. Now that the storm is gone, the remaining ice and snow is still causing problems.
"There has been lots of stress," says Massac County resident David Wiley. "First the tornado and then this comes and just stops everything."
Some homes still have holes in their roofs and windows making for difficult living situations for residents.
Wiley's sister's mobile home was destroyed during the November 17 tornado, "The walls and the roof was gone. The floor and frame were up on their side."
For those with minor damage, the two and a half weeks between the tornado and the ice storm was plenty of time to cleanup debris. However, for the harder hit areas, plenty of cleanup still remains.
For Wiley, the removal of his sister's destroyed home was completed a few days before the winter storm.
"We were done with the dirt work and everything on their property," said Wiley. "All the metal and wood cleanup and debris and we were pretty much set and ready to put a new home in."
He says bringing in a new mobile home will take at least a few weeks.
"With the ground frozen we can't do anything with the equipment or bring in a mobile home," said Wiley. "We are pretty much at a stand still until it clears up."
