WWII Veteran Receives Medals
WSIL -- A Mt. Vernon veteran finally has the medals he earned during World War II.
Retired Army Sergeant Bueford McClerren was presented with four medals, including the Bronze Star, during a ceremony Thursday in Carterville.
"I certainly appreciate this. I didn't suspect a thing," said McClerren.
The 87-year-old was surrounded by family and friends as the Illinois National Guard recognized his service during the war.
"The creed of an officer states two basic responsibilities will always be upper most in my mind - accomplish mission and welfare of soldiers. This is something Sergeant McClerren clearly lived by," said Staff Sgt. Beau Detrick.
McClerren served from May 1944 to June 1946. On Thursday, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
