WSIL Wins Illinois AP Best Newscast Award

CARTERVILLE – For the third straight year Illinois Associated Press has honored WSIL-TV with its award for Best Newscast. WSIL’s evening newscast, News 3 at 5, captured the 2012 award for downstate television, which includes all stations serving the six Illinois television markets outside of Chicago and St. Louis. WSIL’s News 3 at 6 newscast won in 2010 and 2011.

After two straight years of winning the AP award for Outstanding News Operation, WSIL-TV finished second in 2012 to KWQC-TV in Davenport, Iowa.

The awards were announced March 11, 2013. WSIL also won the following:

Best Series or Documentary, 1st Place: “Rebuilding Joplin”
Reporter: Stephanie Tyrpak, Videographer: Benjy Jeffords.

Best Light Feature, 1st Place: “Know Your Limits”
Reporter: Emily Finnegan, Videographer: Andy Shofstall.

Best Reporter, 1st Place: Fanna Haile-Selassie

Best Videography, 2nd Place: “Harrisburg Tornado Damage”
Jared Roberts and Benjy Jeffords

Best Sports Report, 2nd Place: “NubAbility Camp”

Over the last two years, WSIL has won 16 first or second place Illinois AP awards for Downstate TV, with 8 first place finishes, more than any other station.

The 2012 Illinois AP Awards will be presented to stations at a banquet in April.
