SIU Students Learn Sustainable and Organic Farming
CARBONDALE -- SIU students are getting hands-on experience in sustainable and organic farming. Through green living efforts, the students use organic compost to fertilize and grow crops.
The goal is to give students skills in growing fresh, healthy foods while conducting research on organic and sustainable methods. They offer some paid positions and course credits for working on the farm.
"We're using sustainable practices and organic practices in order to grow everything out there," said student Carly Merz.
The farm has grown from 1/2 acre to 1 1/2 acres in its four year existence.
All of the money raised goes back into the farm. It costs around $60,000 each year to maintain. Labor and supplies are the biggest exspenses to operate the farm. Those funds are gained from grants and selling produce to the university dinning halls, the Carbondale Community Farmers Market, and running a once-a-week market on campus.
The farm also welcomes volunteers from the community to learn their farming methods and help out.
