Students Recognize Martin Luther King Through Art
CARBONDALE -- Brehm Preparatory School in Carbondale was extra colorful Saturday. There was an art showing in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. All the art on display were created by students in the Carbondale community. There were paintings and drawings and a variety of sculptures.
Organizers say Dr. King was a big advocate of community service and their art today represented that theme.
"We felt that this was perfect example of what was going on within the community. I mean, kids reciprocate what they're exposed to, what they see happening, what's important to them. And that's very much the foundation of community service," explains event coordinator Susi Vacek.
The Friends of the Shawnee National Forest organized the event and also plans to give all donations to the Meridian Elementary School. The money will replace books and other materials that were lost due to a mold infestation.
