Student Return to Boost Local Business
CARBONDALE -- Businesses in Carbondale are seeing an increase in customers as students return to campus.
Some places are already noticing new faces among their regular customers. Students and their families bring more business, especially during the move-in season.
The Blend owner, Ming Wei Huang, has been working on a seasonal schedule. He says he always looks forward to the students returning from break.
"I think that is the problem of the business in a college town, because they have three months for the summer and one month for the winter and there are no people here," he says.
Not only does The Blend look forward to students returning as customers, they also hire students as part-time workers.
E'Clair Salon owner Betsy Doughtery says students usually have a method to determine what kinds of services they may need.
"I think they usually find their living space, their bar, their books, and then me," she says. "We're usually the last one on the list, but they find me eventually."
Doughtery says her salon does not compete with local salons but being within walking distance from campus helps bring in customers.
