ST. LOUIS (AP) - Interstate 70 motorists and truckers trying to cross the Mississippi River at St. Louis are on the verge of having a different, $700-million option.

A new four-lane, cable stayed bridge named after St. Louis Cardinals great Stan Musial opens Sunday to traffic.

The Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, or the "Stan Span," is meant to relieve traffic on the chronically crammed, 50-year-old Poplar Street Bridge. That's one of just two bridges in the nation that accommodates three freeways.

Locals will get their first sampling of the bridge Saturday, when thousands are registered to take part in a six-kilometer fun run that includes the span as part of the course.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says the bridge will also be open to the public between noon and 4 p.m. Saturday so people can walk, run or bike across the span.

Ground was broken on the bridge in April 2010, and the last piece was put into place last summer.

Some tips for the day:

The general public will not be allowed on the bridge until noon, because of the morning's races and event set up.

Please do not bring pets, large or hard-sided coolers, alcohol or glass bottles.

Please do not bring skateboards, inline skates, skate shoes, scooters or other wheeled vehicles.

For bike riders, the bridge may be very crowded, so please give fellow attendees plenty of space.

The new I-70 bridge over the river is set to open to traffic on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
