MURPHYSBORO  --  Summer is often considered puppy and kitten season and many animal shelters are filled to the brim. Now, a local group is encouraging pet owners to get their animals fixed.

Timber Trails Low-Cost Veterinary Services and Wright-Way Rescue are teaming up for their first Spay/Neuter-A-Thon. It kicked off at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 and wraps up at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 19.

The procedure starts at $50, but the cost varies based on the size of the animal. Low-income pet owners can get an even lower rate with proof of income.

The clinic also offers other services at low-cost like micro-chipping, vaccines and heart-worm treatments.

Christy Anderson, the founder of Wright-Way Rescue, says they hope to hold a Spay/Neuter-A-Thon once a month.

"In some of the more rural areas, there are more pets than there are pet owners wanting to adopt, so spay and neutering is definitely key in making sure as few pets as possible are euthanized and that's our goal," she said.

This week's Spay/Neuter-A-Thon is full, but the clinic is already taking names for next month's event. To help or to make an appointment for your animal, call Timber Trails Low-Cost Veterinary Services at (618) 319-4271.
