Sheriff Warns of Ameren Phone Scam

By WSIL Manager

MARION -- The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam involving Ameren.

The sheriff's office says people in the Marion and Carbondale area have received calls from someone claiming to be with Ameren Illinois. The caller says the residents are behind on their bills, and power will be turned off unless they immediately make a payment using a "Green Dot" or other prepaid debit card.

On its website, Ameren says it does not demand "personal, account or financial information for immediate payment." Anyone who receives this type of call is advised to hang up.

For questions about your account, contact Ameren Illinois at (800) 755-5000.
