CARBONDALE -- Computer skills were put to the test Saturday at SIU. The School of Information Systems and Applied Technology hosted Cyber Security Day.

More than one hundred area high school and junior college students were on campus to learn about cyber security from various speakers. And dozens more SIU and Lakeland College students competed in the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.

The SIU Security Dawgs faced off against seven other teams. The goal was to defend cyber attacks while creating a secure network for a business. Organizers say it's great preparation for students once they leave the university.

"The more you practice, the more you learn, the better you are in this field. But what they're learning is you must understand concepts," says SIU Associate Professor Belle Woodward.

In the afternoon, the high school and junior college visitors participated in a mock cyber competition.

The SIU Security Dawgs won the competition and will now move on to regionals in Chicago.
