Robberies Prompt Public Safety Advisory

CARBONDALE -- The Carbondale Police Department has issued a public safety advisory after three robberies in three days. All occurred in an area just north of the SIU campus.

The first happened around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of West College Street. The victims told officers two men with a gun demanded money and personal items.

Less than two hours later, officers were called to another robbery in the area of South Beveridge Street and West Cherry Street. The victims said they had been attacked and robbed by three men. Two people have since been arrested in connection with the robbery, but police are not releasing their names.

A third robbery was also reported around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of West College Street. Officers say two men armed with a handgun approached the victim and demanded money. No one was injured.

Carbondale Police say additional officers will be patrolling the area. The department reminds residents:

* Stay alert and be aware of surroundings when walking at night

* Try walking with a group of people

* If you think you're being followed, immediately call 911

Anyone who notices suspicious activity in the area or has information about the robberies is asked to call Carbondale Police at (618) 457-3200, SIU Police at (618) 453-3771 or Crime Stoppers at (618) 549-COPS.
