Restaurant Report Card: May 26, 2014
WSIL -- Ryan's in Mt. Vernon got an 80 from the health inspector, but critical violations weren't the main issue.
There was only one critical deduction, because the dishwasher wasn't getting hot enough. It was fixed immediately by adjusting the temperature control.
Beef tips were left uncovered, none of the employees in the kitchen had their hair covered with a hat or hair net, two ice bins were leaking onto the floor, and some food in the refrigerator wasn't labeled with the date it was opened. The dumpster lids were left open, a broken pizza cooler had to be taken out of the restaurant, and there was water pooling in some coolers.
We did not hear back from management for comment on the inspection.
It was an 83 for the Carbondale Applebee's.
The restaurant racked up more than 30 violations. A cooler wasn't keeping food cold enough, and all the items had to be moved or thrown away.
The inspector spotted excessive ice buildup in the walk-in freezer and asked that food being stored underneath it be moved until the problem was fixed. Several spots had to be cleaned including the inside of the microwave, the shelves and interior of the refrigerator, the dish machine, cooking knives, and areas of the walls and floor in the kitchen.
Applebee's also lost points because pots and pans that were supposed to be clean had to be rewashed, something the report points out has been a problem in the past.
The large number of violations resulted in the restaurant being put back on a monthly inspection schedule and ordered to attend an informal hearing at the health department.
Newman's Corner in Herrin earned an 89.
There weren't any critical problems, but cups were being stored in the bathroom, the dumpster was left open, and the three-compartment sink didn't have a drain board.
Marion staple Bennie's received a 95 on its most recent check. The fryer area had to be cleaned, and the door and trim of the freezer was damaged and needed repairs.
And finally, the top spot goes to the Michellsville Store in Harrisburg with a 99. The lone lost point was because the floor under some shelves needed to be swept.
