WSIL -- The health department gave Golden Corral in Carbondale a 75 on its June inspection.

The restaurant racked up 41 violations. Employees were spotted washing equipment in a hand sink instead of in the dish area, which resulted in two critical deductions. That cost Golden Corral a total of nine points. The third critical violation was an open bag of flour left against a box of oil filtering chemicals. Those were all corrected on the spot.

The rest of the issues were more minor and largely cleaning related. Mixer shields, sheet pans, and utensils all had to be washed more thoroughly. The floor in the dumpster room, the stove and the inside of the fish cooler were dirty, there were dried food splashes in several spots, and black mold was found in the dish washing area; drips from the ceiling also had to be fixed.

The inspector recommended that staff be retrained on basic sanitation, hand washing and proper cooking temperatures. Management says their in-house quality assurance person was on leave at the time and everything was addressed within a day.

Carterville's Country Cupboard earned an 89.

There weren't any critical violations, but the restaurant needed to make some repairs to the wall behind the dish washer, fix a broken leg on the grease trap and a leak in the ice machine.

A container of meat was on the floor in the freezer and that floor needed to be cleaned. The dumpster lid wasn't closed, and oven mitts were left in with the potatoes.

Logan's Roadhouse in Marion got a 91 last month.

A leak at the hand sink in the dish area had to be repaired. Additionally, items in bulk storage weren't covered, and there were missing ceiling tiles above the ice machine.

A 95 puts the Carbondale Fazoli's next on our list.

There were no critical deductions, but the ice dispenser at the soda fountain needed to be cleaned more frequently, along with the front of the bread stick cooler and side of the microwave.

A follow-up shows everything was corrected within a week.

And topping the Report Card this week is the Thompsonville Café with a 96.

The kitchen and bathroom door frames had to be fixed, and there were stains on the ceiling. The inspector praised the restaurant for being "great overall."
