Restaurant Report Card: Feb. 20, 2012WSIL NEWS -- The five eateries in our Restaurant Report Card this week range from a popular chain that received multiple visits from the health department last month to a local spot that earned a perfect score. Health inspectors made three stops at Applebee's in Carbondale in January. The restaurant initially received a score of 78, losing points for 18 violations. The two most serious cost Applebee's five points each: potentially hazardous food that wasn't labeled correctly and spray bottles that weren't marked with their contents. The inspector also noted raw meat stored above pre-cooked potatoes in the the fridge and several cleaning issues, including food debris on pots and pans that were ready for use. Some of the problems were corrected right away and Applebee's got two weeks to clean up its kitchen. When the health department came back the restaurant's score rose to 81, but there were also new problems like no hot water at one of the hand sinks and sanitizer at the wrong concentration. A re-check a few days later found all the violations were fixed. El Rancherito in Mt. Vernon makes a return appearance on the Report Card. At its January inspection, El Rancherito scored a 79 due to several critical violations, including a roach infestation. But when the health department came back at the start of this month, rhe inspector found all the problems had been addressed and said there was no evidence of vermin. Management tells News 3 they're continuing to have the restaurant sprayed every week wven though the health department only called for bi-monthly treatment. The Ranch in Johnston City is next on our list with a score of 83. The restaurant lost points for rodent activity in the frozen food prep area. Surfaces with exposure to rodent droppings needed to be cleaned and sanitized, and the private sewage system needed to be serviced. A follow up check about two weeks later found The Ranch corrected the violations and is using poison to eliminate the rodent problem. Beth's Café in Zeigler earned a 94 on its most recent inspection. The report indicates the only two violations were for a bowl of rags stored above some single serve items and because the vent hood needed to be cleaned. The top score this week--a perfect 100---goes the 9th Street Grill in Mt. Vernon. The inspector found zero violations during a visit in January.
