Repair Shop Destroyed By Fire

MT. VERNON -- Fire destroyed an auto repair shop in Mt. Vernon Monday.

The Mt. Vernon Fire Department was called to Mr. Dickey's Auto Repair on S. 28th Street around 8:20 p.m. for a report of an explosion and fire.

Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says a car inside the building was being prepped for a paint job. Sargent says the employee had just left when it's believed the fumes from the project reached a wood-burning stove, sparking the explosion.

Crews were on scene for about two hours.

The building is a total loss. Four other vehicles outside were also damaged.
