COBDEN -- The memory of a Union County man  killed by a rare form of Strep was honored on Sunday.

Family and friends gathered for a fundraising dinner, live music, and a silent auction at the Blue Boar in Cobden.

Jonesboro native Kristopher Treat died of an extremely rare infection called "Strep Milleri" on July 21st.

His family says he was found on the side of the road in early June, near where he was staying for school in Edwardsville. It's thought he suffered seizures before safely pulling over his car. He was later found unconsious.

Treat spent the following 42 days in the hospital surrounded by friends and family. Doctors were treating more than 12 leisions on his brain that resulted from the agressive disease.

Family friends planned Saturday's event to honor the example Kris set in his passion for the SIUE wreslting squad and his aspirations for a Master's Degree in Criminal Law.

"The community coming to our aid the way they have is just beautiful, " said Kris's mother, Kristie Treat. She said the exuberant support of more than 35 area businesses leaves her feeling very blessed.

The $4,215 raised will help the Treat family with funeral expenses and scholarships in Kris's name.

"It means the world to me," said Kris's mother. "The fundraiser means he's going to carry on. Through the scholarship, through the wrestling, he's always going to have a hand in all of this."

"He was like another son to me," said family friend Tiffany Dillow. She said many of Kris's friends have had a rough time dealing.

"It's been really hard on [my daughter]," said Dillow. She said the two spent a great deal of time at school together and maintained a long-term friendship.

"She's doing her best to celebrate Kris's life now and carry on," said Dillow. "Celebrating his life, instead of stopping in our tracks, is what we think he would want us to do."
