WSIL -- Governor Pat Quinn has signed legislation to support repairs to the Big Muddy Levee.

Senate Bill 2721, sponsored by State Senator Dave Luechtefeld (R-Okawville) and State Representative Mike Bost (R-Murphysboro), allows Jackson County leaders to use an expired bond referendum to raise up to $1.7 million for critical repairs.

"Today is a good day for the people of Grand Tower and Jackson County as a whole," Rep. Bost said. "Thanks to the Governor's signature, Jackson County will now be able to raise the necessary funds needed to repair the Grand Tower Levee."

The new law is effective immediately.

"Hopefully this bill signing will allow Jackson County to move forward with the protection of Grand Tower and areas in the 'bottoms,'" Senator Luechtefeld said. "The diligent efforts of the classes at Shawnee Junior-Senior High, the Jackson County Board and other local officials should serve as a quality model for future cooperative efforts."
