Price Drop for Tide Detergent Coming Soon
WSIL -- Laundry detergent is a major expense for many families. The biggest producer is responding to demand for a lower priced option. Procter and Gamble is introducing a new, less expensive version of Tide detergent next year. The new brand of Tide will be called Tide Simply Clean and Fresh.
"Tide is a good product. It's our number one seller in our laundries and lots of people come to the door with it," says CWI owner Craig Wisinski.
Wisinski's company has several laundromats in the area. He says three quarters of his customers use Tide. His employees even use it when they wash items that are dropped off.
"In today's economy I think it is a great thing for Tide to make it cheaper because lots of people use it, thats for sure," explains Wisinski.
Procter and Gamble is known for premium products like Tide that cost more than competitors and are perceived to be higher quality. But the company says growth has slowed, so they're offering new products at the other end of the price scale to become more balanced
"We go through a container of laundry detergent in about two weeks, per building," says Lee Eklund, Director of Malone's Early Learning Center.
Eklund says the daycare washes sheets, bibs, and wash cloths every day.
"To use Tide, would be relatively expensive, about $4 more a container than the other brand that we use," explains Eklund.
Eklund says if Tide's new prices are competitive the center could switch to a different red bottle.
"Tide is a good brand. It's just when you are running a business, you are looking to pinch pennies wherever you can. That's where we pinch some pennies," says Eklund.
The new, cheaper version of Tide is expected to hit stores in February. It's one of a number of new detergents being released.
