Prayer Vigil for Local Explosion Victims
FRANKLIN COUNTY-- Family and friends came together for a night of healing and prayer at the Zeigler Town Circle Wednesday. A car explosion last Saturday killed 35-year-old Michael Brower of Carterville and left his uncle, John Brower, with minor burns. Fifty-eight year old Marion doctor, Luis Lopez was critically injured in the explosion.
The gathering was emotional, as everyone at the vigil seemed to have a personal connection to the victims. They describe the men as pillars of the southern Illinois community.
Georgia De La Gorza, asked the Brower and Lopez families what those who know and love the three men could do.
"I thought okay get the community together, prayer, this was the answer," De La Gorza said.
"He was awesome. Always had a smile on his face. Loved his kids, loved his wife, loved his family," added Tiffany Matier.
She is Michael Brower's younger sister. The outpouring of community support helped keep her going as she mourns her brother's passing.
All this because of a freak accident near Lopez's Florida vacation home. The three friends travelled to Destin to work on the house. A car explosion connected to acetylene torches killed Michael Brower and critically injured Lopez. John Brower suffered minor burns.
The crowd lit candles, and signed prayer petitions for the men, setting luminaria to create a circle of love and light, sending a message of love to the families.
Doctor Lopez remains in critical condition at a Florida hospital.
