CARBONDALE --  The Varsity Center in Carbondale may soon be getting a face lift. Tuesday, center managers and city leaders unveiled plans to renovate the building. The renovation calls for an updated look on the outside of the former movie theater and additions to the interior.

"It gives a different kind of venue," explained Carbondale Mayor Don Monty. "It's the kind of thing that can attract people to the downtown area."

"The new façade will reflect and resemble what the Varsity looked like when it was first constructed in the 40s and 50s," said Jack Langowski with Varsity Center for the Arts.

In the past, flooding has been an issue, but theater officials are working with the city to get that resolved. The hope is to finish the project in 18 months, depending on funding.
