Overtime Pay for Prison Workers Rising
WSIL -- The cost of paying overtime to prison system employees has topped $60 million in Illinois. That's more than what it takes to run many of the state's agencies.
The main reason for the high cost of overtime is there are less workers and more inmates. Several factors have led to the systems being understaffed, including the closure of several prisons like Tamms Supermax.
While overtime pay is expected to drop, it is projected the state will rack up a bill as high as $52 million this year.
