New Grocery Store Moving into Old Du Quoin Kroger
PERRY COUNTY -- The new year will bring a new business to Du Quoin. The former Kroger building will be renovated and become home to a new grocery store.
The announcement has a lot of people in the community excited. Kroger shut the doors at the Du Quoin location in March.
"Losing the Kroger store was actually pretty traumatic," said Mayor Rex Duncan. "They've been here in Du Quoin, they were in here for 99 years."
Bottom Dollar Cost Plus could begin work in January to makeover the old store space. The store will bring new jobs and new options to the Southtowne Shopping Center.
"They're going to have fully staffed meat department, fresh produce," said Duncan.
On Thursday, the city approved $130,000 from a sales tax fund to help the southern Illinois company with renovations.
"I know there's a lot of Kroger labeling in there," said Duncan. "I know they've got some conversion of equipment."
So far, Duncan has been impressed with the feedback and how the Cost Plus owners have been involved in the process.
"They came to the city council meeting," said Duncan. "They've been here. I think they're going to be a regular presence in our community."
Du Quoin resident, Carmen Helmer, is also thrilled to see a local company move in to an empty building. She has high hopes for the new store.
"Some jobs, some good food, a good price," said Helmer.
Helmer was disappointed to lose Kroger. She was a former employee and a regular shopper there. Helmer now picks up groceries in Carbondale.
"I go to Kroger down there now because I have to," said Helmer. "But it's very inconvenient."
When the store opens next year, Helmer plans to take full advantage.
"We've all learned a valuable lesson," said Helmer. "If we want something to stay in this town, we've got to use it."
Bottom Dollar Cost Plus will lease the space from the Southtowne Shopping Center. Duncan says its set to open in April.
Cost Plus also has other locations in Illinois and is currently working to open a store in Herrin.
