National Night Out in Mt. Vernon

By Roni LeForge

MT. VERNON -- Hundreds enjoyed great weather for the annual National Night Out Event in Mt. Vernon's Veterans Memorial Park.

Officers provided food, bouncy houses, games, even a "Dunk-A-Cop" tank. The K-9 unit conducted demonstrations and police vehicles were on display.
National Night Out's mission is to build relationships between the community and police.
"This is a totally different environment for the kids to meet with police and interact with police," said Chris Deichman, Mt. Vernon's Assistant Police Chief.
"Kids will understand that they are not just mean, they are here to help you- to protect you," said mother Natalie Hollins. She brought her son to the event.
This was the 14th year for the event in Mt. Vernon. National Night Out was held in 16,000 communities nationwide this year.
