Mt. Vernon Hosts IHSRA Rodeo Competition
MT. VERNON -- Mt Vernon hosted the season-ending rodeo competition on Sunday for Illinois High School Rodeo Association. Students from across the state flocked to King City Saddle Club, just north of Mt. Vernon, to compete. Some of the events included barrel racing, bareback riding, calf roping, and goat tying.
IHSRA President Cary Newbold says the rodeo presents a different environment than most other sporting events.
"It's just a good family sport and the kids, if you'll watch out here, they'll root for each other. You don't hear any negativity as far as booing from the stands, everybody is rooting for each other," says Newbold.
Rodeo competitions will start back up in the spring next year.
