JOHNSTON CITY -- City streets were lined with mourners Sunday, as they paid their last respects to local miner Daniel Payne.

The funeral for the 25-year-old was held at Murman and Wilson Funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday. Folks from all over southern Illinois came to show support for Payne's family.

He was killed in a mining accident at the Viking mine Wednesday afternoon. One of Payne's former teachers remembered him fondly.

Linda Duncan says, "There is no way for you to understand it.  It just wasn't right with him going to be a new father.  He would have been so wonderful.  It's just something we don't understand and we have to have faith that someday it'ss work out and we will see him again."

Daniel Payne was recently married and was expecting his first child next month.
