Miners Big HIt For Local Businesses
MARION -- The Miners are a hit with local businesses. Each summer baseball season brings added business to Marion hotels.
For seven seasons the Southern Illinois Miners have been a highlight for the community.
"Our season kicks off summer. That's kind of the way I look at it. It makes you feel like summer is upon us," says Miners' Vice President Tim Arseneau.
Now in the team's eighth season, Arseneau expects 4,000 people for Tuesday's home opener. That means more people dining locally and staying in hotels.
"Pre-season is usually when we see a lot of scouts come in. They will stay for numerous days. Sometimes they'll be here for a whole week." says Fairfield Inn and Suites manager April Inman.
Fairfield Inn and Suites is within walking distance of the ball park which is perfect for fans. Inman calls their location a great promotional tool.
"Especially promoting Williamson County, promoting Marion as things for travelers and they're passing through to stop and do. It is absolutely great that we have Rent One Park here," she says.
This is peak season for the hotel, taking in 50 to 100 families that attend games.
"One thing that's sustained us is the fact that people in this area are miners fans and are sports fans in general," says Arseneau.
America's Best Value Inn also sees a bump in business in the summer. Arseneau says it's the official team hotel.
Hotel managers count on the steady business during the Miners' season to cover their property taxes.
"They are taking 16 to 18 rooms so we don't have to worry about those rooms. Until the season is over we have those rooms," says manager Mita Patel.
And as fans continue to support local businesses and the team, the Miners say they're dedicated to the community.
"We want to work with everybody and find ways that we can help each other," says Arseneau.
