MURPHYSBORO -- Memorial Hospital of Carbondale held a "Disaster Blaster" open house Friday at Southern Illinois Airport in Murphysboro. The event gave medical and emergency personnel, along with the public, an inside look at the set-up and operation of the Disaster Blaster fleet, which can be used in cases of emergency.

The fleet has the capability of setting up a 300-bed field hospital and can serve a 23-county region in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.

"We're really focused on medical response to disasters, being able to supplement hospitals in being able to care for the community and the injured people during any kind of disaster," said Medical Disaster Coordinator Mike Maddox.

In years past, the Disaster Blasters have deployed to flood zones in the region, but hospital officials say they're prepared for just about anything.
